Products:Clean diesel fuels require low sulfur and aromatics, up to now, most developed countries such as the United States, Europe and Japan request use of diesel fuels meeting European IV specification, i. e., the content of sulfur in diesel less than 50g/g. Hydrotreating process is the most effective technology for desulfurization and dearomatization of diesel fuels, meanwhile, the catalysts with high performance is the key technology for production of clean diesel fuels. Right now, common used commercial catalysts for hydrotreating of diesel fuels are Ni, Co, Mo, W sulfides supported on alumina. However, the loading quantity of active component in the supported catalysts cannot be very high, usually the maximum about 33%, due to limitation in pore volume and surface area. In addition, the intrinsic activity of the supported catalysts is not very high. Therefore, the activity of the supported catalysts is difficult to satisfy technically the requirement to produce the clean diesel fuels through once hydrotreating process from extremely poor feedstocks such as the straight run gas oils of naphthenic crudes, the light cycle oils of cat-cracker units, the coking gas oils and coal tars.
WH-2 is a new type of catalysts different completely from the supported catalysts, it is called unsupported or bulk catalysts. WH-2 is manufactured from the meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides, appropriate additives and binders, no support is needed. The Industrial Catalysis Laboratory(ICL) of China University of Petroleum innovates a novel technology to synthesize successfully the meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides with high pore volume and surface area. The precursors of active components such as nickel, molybdic and tungstenic salts react by use of the solid surface reaction technique to the meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides. The meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides, appropriate additives and binders are made to the WH-2 catalyst through moulding, drying and calcination. WH-2 bulk catalyst overthrows the original concepts of carriers and active components for supported catalysts. It is called as a revolutionary advancement of the preparation technology for hydrotreating catalysts. The meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides are both carriers and active components, this breakout completely the limitation of pore volume and surface area of carriers on the loading quantity of the active components, therefore, the active components occupy more than 80% in the bulk catalyst. Moreover, the strong interaction between Ni, Co, Mo, W oxides and the surface of alumina is avoided completely, the performance of the active components bring into play thoroughly. Therefore, WH-2 bulk catalyst has extremely high concentration of active sites, their intrinsic activity is extremely high. The HDS, HDN and HDAr activities of WH-2 bulk catalyst are 2 to 3 times higher than the conventional supported catalysts. WH-2 bulk catalyst is suitable to deep hydrotreating of middle and naphthenic straight-run gas oils, cat-cracker cycle oils, coking gas oils, VGO and CGO with high sulfur, nitrogen and aromatics contents, specially coal tars. Akzo Nobel Company developed the first generation of bulk catalysts at 2001, called Nebula catalyst. Nebula catalyst went to industrial use at 2003, displaying extremely high performance, the HDS, HDN and HDAr activities reaching 2 to 3 times higher than the conventional supported catalysts. Therefore, Nebula catalyst can hydrotreat the gas oils with high sulfur content at moderate pressure to produce the clean diesel fuels meeting European V specification. Up to now, more than 10 hydrotreating units using Nebula catalysts have went to industrial operation.                        
The Industrial Catalysis Laboratory(ICL) of China University of Petroleum innovates the solid surface reaction technique, and apply it for synthesis of the meso-porous Ni-Mo-W composite oxides with high pore volume and surface area. On the bases, WH-2 bulk catalyst was developed. WH-2 has manufactured in semi-industrial scale in Fushun Catalysts Factory of Petrochina, it displays extremely high activities. The gas oil with sulfur of 10,600g/g and nitrogen of 4500g/g was hydrotreated to the clean diesel fuel with sulfur less than 50g/g, the HDS% and HDN% reaches 99.5% and 99%, respectively. That is to say that Wh-2 bulk catalyst already reaches the condition technologically for commercial application. 
WH-2 bulk catalyst is suitable to deep hydrotreating of gas oils, specially middle and naphthenic straight-run gas oils, cat-cracker cycle oils, coking gas oils, VGO, CGO and coal tars with high sulfur, nitrogen and aromatics contents, to produce the clean diesel fuels or their components.
